1 - What's your favourite part about being a rock musician?
Gary-My favourite part about being a rock musician is the electrifying connection with the
audience. There's nothing quite like the energy exchange during live performances, feeling
the crowd's enthusiasm, and knowing that our music resonates with people. It's a thrilling
experience to share the passion and emotion of the music, creating memorable moments
that last a lifetime.
2 - How has your personal journey and life experiences influenced the themes in your
music?
Gary-My personal journey and life experiences have played a significant role in shaping the
themes of my music. Like many artists, I draw inspiration from the highs and lows, joys and
sorrows of my own life. Each chapter, whether filled with triumph or challenge, contributes to
the emotional tapestry of my music. My music is a reflection of my journey, an auditory diary
that captures the essence of what it means to be human. It is my hope that listeners can
connect with these themes on a personal level, finding solace, inspiration, or simply a
soundtrack to their own life experiences.
3 - Can you share a moment in your career where you faced adversity and how it shaped
your artistic perspective?
Gary- Certainly!
One challenging moment in my career was when I experienced a significant creative block. I
found myself struggling to generate new ideas and felt stuck in a creative rut. This adversity
forced me to reevaluate my approach to art and pushed me to explore different mediums
and techniques. In overcoming this obstacle, I not only discovered new ways to express
myself but also gained a deeper understanding of the importance of embracing challenges
as opportunities for growth in my artistic journey.
4 - What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take away from your music?
Gary- In my music, I aim to evoke a range of emotions that resonate with the human experience.
Whether it's the raw energy of rock or the soulful depth of blues, I hope listeners feel a
connection to the passion and authenticity in my work. I want them to experience a journey
through the highs and lows of life, finding solace, inspiration, or simply a moment of escape
in the melodies and lyrics. Ultimately, I strive to convey a sense of shared emotion and
understanding that transcends individual stories and unites us through the universal
language of music.
5 - In what ways does your cultural background or heritage influence your musical
expression?
Gary-As a resident of Park City, Utah, my cultural background has a unique influence on my
musical expression. The rich tapestry of Park City's community, with its blend of outdoor
enthusiasts, artistic communities, and diverse influences, has shaped the way I approach
music. The mountainous landscapes and vibrant local arts scene inspire a fusion of genres,
creating a sound that reflects the eclectic nature of my surroundings. Additionally, the
community's appreciation for various cultural events and festivals provides opportunities for
collaboration and cross-cultural musical exploration, further enriching my artistic expression.
6 - How do you navigate the fine line between vulnerability and maintaining a sense of
privacy in your lyrics?
Gary- In my songwriting process, I strive to strike a delicate balance between vulnerability and
preserving a sense of privacy. While I draw inspiration from personal experiences and
emotions, I carefully choose the details I reveal, ensuring that my lyrics capture the essence
of the feelings without compromising the intimacy of certain moments. It's about conveying
the universal aspects of human emotions while respecting the boundaries of my own privacy.
This approach allows me to connect with listeners on a deep level while maintaining a level
of personal discretion.
7 - What societal or global issues inspire you to address them through your music?
Gary- As someone who experienced the profound impact of war firsthand during my service in the
Vietnam War, I am deeply moved by the Ukrainian conflict. The echoes of my own
experiences fuel a sense of empathy and a desire to address the human toll of war through
my music. I believe in the power of music to raise awareness, inspire empathy, and foster
understanding, and I aim to use my platform to shine a light on the societal and global
issues, such as the Ukrainian War, that continue to affect us all.
8 - How do you handle self-doubt or creative insecurities during the songwriting process?
Gary- Embracing self-doubt and creative insecurities is a natural part of the songwriting journey for
me. Instead of letting them hinder my progress, I use them as catalysts for growth. I find
inspiration in vulnerability, and it often leads to more authentic and relatable lyrics.
Additionally, seeking feedback from trusted collaborators helps me gain valuable
perspectives and refine my work. Ultimately, acknowledging and working through self-doubt
is an integral part of the creative process.
9 - Can you discuss the significance of album artwork and visual aesthetics in conveying
your musical identity?
Gary- Certainly!
Album artwork and visual aesthetics play a crucial role in conveying my musical identity.
They serve as a visual representation of the emotions, themes, and atmosphere embedded
in the music. The artwork becomes a gateway for the audience to connect with the sound on
a deeper level, creating a more immersive experience. The visual elements complement and
enhance the storytelling within the music, providing listeners with a holistic and memorable
impression of my artistic identity.
10 - Can you share a moment where a fan's interpretation of your song surprised or deeply
resonated with you?
Gary- Certainly! One memorable instance was when a fan shared their interpretation of my song
during a meet-and-greet. The fan saw the lyrics in a way I hadn't anticipated, adding layers
of personal meaning that truly touched me. It was a powerful reminder of the diverse ways
music can connect with people on a profound level, transcending the artist's original intent.
